What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine how historians ask questions, gather sources, test evidence, and build explanations about the past. They compare accounts of the same event and explain why interpretations may differ.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can identify each historian’s claim and supporting evidence in two accounts. They can explain how source choices, new evidence, or different questions led to different conclusions.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think history is one fixed story or that every disagreement means one historian is lying. They may also confuse an unsupported opinion with an interpretation built from evidence.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Historian A links Maya decline to drought using lake sediments. Historian B links it to warfare using fortifications. State each claim and explain why the interpretations differ.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups an evidence envelope about an ancient city, then have them arrange artifact cards and write a three-sentence interpretation.
Discuss and write: Can two historians disagree and both be credible? Use one piece of evidence to defend your answer.
Play a claim and evidence matching game, then challenge pairs to build two different explanations from the same source cards.
Compare two news reports about the same local event, and circle how source choice or wording changes each account.
