What Students Need to Do: Students use pictures, objects, and short accounts to learn about people, events, and settings from the past. They identify who was involved, what happened, where it happened, and clues that show it was long ago.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can study a historical picture or hear a short account, then name the people, event, place, and time clues. The student can explain one way the account teaches us about life beyond their own experience.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think history is make-believe because it is often told as a story. They may also assume old photographs show the present or that unfamiliar places are imaginary.
How to Assess It: Show a historical photograph and ask, “Who and what do you see, where might this be, and what clues show it is from the past?”

Lesson moves

Place old and modern classroom object pictures in two hoops, then have pairs explain which details signal the past.
Write or discuss: What can a photograph of children at school long ago teach us about their lives?
Play a matching game with cards showing historical people, events, places, and time clues from familiar class readings.
Compare an early photograph of the school or town with a current one, then circle two changes and one feature that stayed.
