What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how stories, artifacts, traditions, and biographies carry beliefs and customs across generations. They use historical examples to show how people’s choices can model courage, honesty, leadership, or harmful behavior.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can connect a historical source to a cultural practice or shared value that it preserves. The student can also explain what a historical figure’s actions teach, using specific evidence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat history as only a list of dates and events. They may call every famous person a positive role model or name a character trait without citing an action that shows it.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short biography and an image of a cultural artifact. Ask them to explain one cultural value being passed on and one character lesson, citing evidence from each source.

Ways to Teach It
Students examine a family recipe, photograph, song, or object and create a label explaining what cultural knowledge it preserves.
Ask students to write: What can a historical figure’s hardest choice teach people living now?
Play Evidence Match by pairing cards showing historical actions with cards naming character traits and cultural values.
Students interview a family or community member about a tradition, then explain what belief or value the tradition passes on.
