What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students listen to a story about a person from long ago. They retell key events in order and explain how the person showed honesty, courage, or responsibility.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students name the person, tell what happened first, next, and last, and identify a character trait. They point to an action from the story that supports their choice.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name a trait without connecting it to an action. They may mix up event order, confuse bravery with being fearless, or treat responsibility as simply following directions.
How to Assess It
- Read a short historical story, then ask: “What did the person do, and which trait did that action show?” Have students answer orally or draw and label the action.

Ways to Teach It
After a read-aloud, students arrange three event cards in order and attach an honesty, courage, or responsibility badge to the matching action.
Ask, “Which choice best showed good character, and what happened because of it?” Students share with a partner, then draw their answer.
Play Trait Match by pairing illustrated story actions with honesty, courage, or responsibility cards, then asking students to explain each match.
Invite a school worker to describe a responsible choice, then compare that choice with one made by a person in the historical story.
