What Students Need to Do: Students examine decisions made by leaders and citizens in Greek city-states and the Roman Republic. They identify virtues such as courage, justice, duty, moderation, and service to the public good.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can explain how a figure such as Pericles, Cincinnatus, or Cicero showed civic virtue through specific actions. They can also judge the effects and limits of that leadership using historical evidence.
Common Misconceptions: Students may assume Greek democracy included every resident or that Rome remained a republic throughout its history. They may also treat civic virtue as simple kindness instead of action for the public good.
How to Assess It: Give students short profiles of Pericles and Cincinnatus. Ask them to name one civic virtue each person displayed and cite one action as evidence.

Lesson moves

Have groups sort leader cards, action cards, and virtue cards, then defend two matches using evidence from each card.
Ask students to write which matters more in a civic leader, courage, justice, duty, or moderation, using one ancient example.
Play Civic Virtue Match, where teams connect ancient actions to virtues and earn points by explaining each connection accurately.
Compare an ancient leader's public decision with a local official's decision reported in a recent city council article.
