What Students Need to Do: Students name people from history who showed honesty, courage, or responsibility. They connect each character ideal to a specific choice or action from the person’s life.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students identify a historical person, name the character ideal shown, and give one accurate example. They explain their thinking with a simple sentence such as, “Harriet Tubman showed courage when she helped people escape slavery.”
Common Misconceptions: Students may choose a trait because a person was famous, not because of an action. They may think courage means having no fear, or confuse responsibility with simply following orders.
How to Assess It: Read: “Harriet Tubman risked her safety to guide enslaved people to freedom.” Ask: “Which character ideal did she show, and what action proves it?”

Lesson moves

Give pairs picture, action, and trait cards for historical figures, then have them build matching sets and explain each match.
Read a short biography of Abraham Lincoln, then ask students to draw and label one action showing honesty or responsibility.
Label three corners honesty, courage, and responsibility, then read historical actions aloud while students move to the matching corner.
Show a local historical marker or monument photo, then ask students what character ideal the honored person may have shown.
