What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students match notable African Americans with actions and achievements that showed courage, service, or love of country. They explain why each action mattered using a specific fact.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can identify at least three people or groups from a picture, name, or short biography. The student connects each one to an accurate action and explains how it showed heroism or patriotism.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may call any famous achievement heroic without naming courage, sacrifice, or service. They may confuse people, events, and time periods, or assume patriotism only means military service.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Match Rosa Parks, the Tuskegee Airmen, and Jesse Owens to three listed actions. Explain how one action showed heroism or patriotism.

Ways to Teach It
Create cards with names, pictures, actions, and dates, then have pairs assemble correct four card biography sets.
After reading a short account of Rosa Parks, students write how her choice showed courage and helped the country.
