What Students Need to Do: Students identify Lonnie Johnson, Mae Jemison, and George Washington Carver from pictures or names. They connect each person to a simple fact about their work or achievement.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student matches each person to the correct object, picture, or achievement. The student explains each match using a short sentence, drawing, or labeled picture.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think George Washington Carver invented peanuts, rather than studied plants and found new uses for crops. They may also confuse Mae Jemison with a pilot or Lonnie Johnson with an astronaut.
How to Assess It: Give students pictures of a water blaster, a space shuttle, and crops. Ask them to match each picture to a person and explain one match aloud.

Lesson moves

Give pairs photo, name, and clue cards to sort into three groups for Johnson, Jemison, and Carver.
Ask, "Whose work would you like to learn more about, and why?" Students answer with a drawing and one sentence.
Play a memory game using matching cards with each person on one card and an achievement on another.
Display a water blaster, toy shuttle, and sweet potato, then connect each object to the person whose work it represents.
