What Students Need to Do
- Students name Colin Powell, Willa Beatrice Brown, Carter G. Woodson, and Hiram Revels. They connect each person to a specific act of public or community service.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students match each person to the correct role and explain how that work helped others. They use details such as government leadership, aviation service, education, or elected office.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse Colin Powell with a president or Hiram Revels with a civil rights protest leader. They may think civic service only means military service or any action by a famous person.
How to Assess It
- Give students four name cards and four contribution cards to match. Ask them to choose one match and write, “This was civic service because...”

Ask students to write which leader helped the country in the most interesting way and support their choice with one fact.
Play Who Am I by reading clues about public office, aviation, education, and military leadership while students hold up the matching name card.
Invite students to compare one leader’s service with a school worker or local official who helps their community.
