What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify several African American leaders connected to Florida and describe what each person contributed. They use names, fields, places, and achievements to explain each leader’s impact.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can match leaders such as Mary McLeod Bethune, Zora Neale Hurston, and the Florida Highwaymen with accurate contributions. The student explains how each contribution benefited Florida communities.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think the Florida Highwaymen were one person or assume every leader was born in Florida. They may confuse each leader’s field or name an achievement without explaining its effect on others.
How to Assess It
- Give students three names and three contributions to match. Ask them to choose one match and explain how that person or group helped Florida.

Ways to Teach It
Place leader, contribution, and Florida location cards at stations, then have pairs build correct sets and check them with short biographies.
Ask students to write: Which leader changed Florida most, and what evidence from the biography supports your choice?
Play a matching relay where teams pair leader cards with achievement cards, earning a point only after explaining each connection.
