What Students Need to Do: Students identify Florida people, places, and events connected to the Civil Rights Movement. They explain how boycotts, sit-ins, marches, and legal action challenged segregation.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can describe at least two Florida examples, such as the Tallahassee bus boycott and the St. Augustine demonstrations. They connect each example to a goal or result.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think the movement happened only in Alabama or Georgia. They may confuse the Tallahassee bus boycott with the Montgomery boycott. They may also credit change to one leader rather than organized local action.
How to Assess It: Use this exit ticket: “Choose Tallahassee or St. Augustine. Name one protest, identify who took action, and explain what they wanted to change.”

Lesson moves

Students place event cards for Tallahassee, Jacksonville, and St. Augustine on a Florida map, then arrange them by date.
Ask students to write: “How did young people and local leaders challenge unfair rules in Florida?”
Play a matching game connecting C. K. Steele, Patricia Stephens Due, and Robert Hayling with their cities and actions.
Students examine a local street, school, or landmark named for a civil rights leader and create a short identification plaque.
