What Students Need to Do: Students identify how Florida supported the war through military training, air and naval bases, shipbuilding, farming, and civilian work. They connect Florida’s climate and coastline to these roles.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can name and explain at least two Florida contributions to the war effort. They can explain a cause-and-effect link, such as warm weather allowing year-round flight training.
Common Misconceptions: Florida was mainly a training and supply center, not a major battlefield. Students may overlook shipyard workers, farmers, women, and Black Floridians because they equate war service only with combat.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: On a Florida outline map, mark Camp Blanding and Pensacola. Write two sentences explaining how each location supported the war effort.

Lesson moves

Give students a Florida outline map and cards for Camp Blanding, Pensacola, Tampa shipyards, farms, and offshore U-boat activity to place and label.
Ask students to write: Why did Florida’s weather and coastline make it useful for military training and defense?
Play a matching relay with site cards and role cards, such as Camp Blanding with troop training and Tampa with shipbuilding.
Use an online map to find the nearest wartime base, shipyard, or memorial, then identify its World War II connection.
