What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify Florida goods and services that reach customers across the country and world. They explain how ports, transportation, workers, climate, location, and customers can attract businesses.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can trace a Florida product or service from its source to a national or international market. They can use evidence to explain why a business might choose Florida.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think Florida’s economy depends only on oranges and tourism. They may confuse factors that attract businesses, such as transportation and workers, with products businesses sell.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: “A company wants to open a distribution center in Florida. Name two conditions that may attract it and explain how it could reach wider markets.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups Florida product cards, maps, and yarn, then have them connect oranges, phosphate, tourism, and aerospace to U.S. and world markets.

  2. Ask students to write: Which Florida feature would most attract a new business, and what evidence supports your choice?

  3. Play a sorting relay where teams match business cards to factors such as ports, workers, climate, transportation, and customers.

  4. Examine a Florida airport, seaport, or tourism website, then identify how it links local jobs with national or international trade.
