What Students Need to Do: Students explain how Florida goods and services reach customers in other states and countries. They identify reasons a business might choose Florida, such as ports, transportation routes, workers, and customers.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can trace Florida oranges from a farm to shoppers in another state and explain how that sale connects Florida to the national economy. They can also explain why a shipping company might locate near a Florida port.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think Florida only earns money from tourism. They may also think businesses choose a location only for warm weather, without considering transportation, workers, and customers.
How to Assess It: Ask students to write two sentences: How does a Florida port connect the state to other countries? Why might a business choose to locate near that port?

Lesson moves

Give pairs a Florida map and product cards for oranges, theme park visits, and imported goods, then have them draw routes to customers.
Ask students to write which location suits a shipping business better, a site near a port or one far inland, and explain why.
Play a location match game with business cards for a hotel, orange packer, and shipping company and maps showing roads, ports, and attractions.
Have students check labels on three grocery items for their place of origin, then mark those places and Florida on a map.
