What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students trace how visitor spending supports jobs, businesses, and public services. They also connect more visitors with new buildings, roads, services, and population changes.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can build a clear cause chain from a tourist visit to changes in a Florida community. They support each link with details about spending, jobs, taxes, or development.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think tourism only includes beaches and theme parks. They may treat all visitor spending as profit and overlook costs, seasonal jobs, traffic, or environmental strain. They may also assume every Florida community benefits equally.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: A coastal town opens a new aquarium and draws 100,000 visitors. Name two effects on jobs or businesses and one way the town might change.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs attraction, hotel, restaurant, and road cards, then have them arrange a visitor-spending cause chain and explain each link.

  2. Ask, “Would a new tourist attraction help every local resident?” Students write a claim with one benefit and one possible cost.

  3. Play Tourism Ripple Effect: teams draw visitor action cards and earn points for correctly naming direct and indirect local effects.

  4. Use a local tourism website and county map to identify nearby visitor sites, related jobs, and signs of community growth.
