What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students name African American artists and match each person to an art form. They describe a contribution by Aretha Franklin, Charles White, James Earl Jones, or Maya Angelou.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a name, photo, or work sample, students identify the artist and say whether the person sang, painted, acted, or wrote. They give one accurate detail about the artist's work.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think the word artist means only a painter. They may confuse Maya Angelou with a singer, James Earl Jones with an author, or Charles White with Abraham Lincoln.

How to Assess It

Give a four-item exit ticket matching each artist to singer, painter, actor, or poet. Students choose one person and write or dictate one contribution.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Sort photo, name, art form, and work clue cards into four sets, then glue each set onto chart paper.

  2. Choose one artist and complete: This person made a difference by ___, and I would ask this person ___.

  3. Play Who Am I by reading one clue at a time while students hold up the matching artist card.

  4. Examine a local event flyer or school arts calendar, then connect its music, painting, acting, or poetry to one featured artist.
