Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students identify African Americans who helped their communities or the country. They describe one person’s work and explain how it helped others.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can match a person, such as Mae Jemison or Garrett Morgan, to a specific achievement. The student can draw or tell how that achievement helped people.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think every notable African American lived long ago or worked in the same field. They may name a person but confuse that person’s job, action, or achievement.
How to Assess It: Ask each student to choose Mae Jemison, Jackie Robinson, or Garrett Morgan, then draw the person’s contribution and complete: “_____ helped by _____.”

Lesson moves

Set out photo and achievement cards for Mae Jemison, Garrett Morgan, and Alma Thomas, then have pairs match and explain each set.
Read Mae Among the Stars, then ask, “How did Mae Jemison’s work help people imagine new possibilities?”
Play a memory game with cards showing each person on one card and that person’s contribution on another.
Walk through the school to find helpers, then compare their work with an African American community leader studied in class.
