Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students identify African Americans whose work helped communities, Florida, or the nation. They describe what each person did and explain how it helped others.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can name a person, describe a specific action or achievement, and tell who benefited. They use facts from a picture, biography, or source.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think contributions are limited to inventions or famous national leaders. They may also confuse the person’s job with the lasting effect of the person’s work.
How to Assess It: Read: “Mary McLeod Bethune started a school for Black children in Florida.” Ask students to write what she contributed and how it helped others.

Lesson moves

Give pairs person cards and achievement cards to match, then place each matched pair on a class timeline.
After reading a short biography, ask, “What changed because of this person’s actions?”
Play a clue game where students identify a person, name the achievement, and explain who benefited.
Use a local history website to find an African American leader, artist, educator, or business owner from your community.
