What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify African Americans whose work affected Florida, local communities, or the nation. They explain each person's contribution and its impact using details from reliable sources.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students accurately describe people from different time periods and fields. They connect each person's actions to a specific change and support the connection with a source detail.

Common Misconceptions

Students may limit contributions to civil rights, sports, or entertainment. They may list a person's job or achievement without explaining its effect on other people or communities.

How to Assess It

Give students a short paragraph about Mary McLeod Bethune. Ask: What did Bethune contribute, and how did it change life for others? Cite one detail.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs biography, contribution, and impact cards for four figures, then have them match each set and explain one link.

  2. Read profiles of Mary McLeod Bethune and Jackie Robinson, then write: How did each person open opportunities for others?

  3. Play Contribution Clue Bingo using clues about education, science, government, business, the arts, and civil rights.

  4. Find a local school, street, or landmark named for an African American, then create a caption explaining that person's community impact.
