What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students name specific African Americans and describe an invention, action, discovery, or service each contributed. They explain how that work improved people’s lives or communities.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can name an African American studied, describe what the person did, and tell how it helped others. The student uses a detail from a read-aloud, picture, or short source.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think everyone studied lived long ago or worked in the same field. They may say someone “helped people” without naming a specific action or result. They may confuse being famous or first with making a contribution.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Draw one African American you studied doing their work. Write the person’s name and complete, “This helped people by _____.”
