Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students identify African American leaders, creators, scientists, educators, athletes, and community members from different time periods. They explain what each person did and how others benefited.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can describe several people and connect each person to a specific achievement or change. They support their explanation with details from a biography, image, speech, or artifact.
Common Misconceptions: Students may assume every notable person lived during slavery or the Civil Rights Movement. They may name an occupation but not explain the contribution, or use vague claims such as “helped people.”
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Read a short profile of Mary McLeod Bethune. Write what she did, who benefited, and one detail that shows her impact.

Lesson moves

Match biography cards and achievement cards for Mary McLeod Bethune, George Washington Carver, and Mae Jemison, then place them on a classroom timeline.
Ask students to write: “Which person created the widest change, and what evidence supports your choice?”
Play a clue-card game where teams identify a person, name the contribution, and explain its effect to earn a point.
Use a local map to find a school, street, or landmark named for an African American, then research why that name was chosen.
