What Students Need to Do: Students trace how beliefs, technologies, art, language, and customs moved through trade, migration, warfare, and travel. They explain how receiving cultures adopted or changed those ideas.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can name a specific exchange, such as Greeks adapting the Phoenician alphabet. They identify the source, the receiving culture, the route of contact, and the resulting change.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat cultural exchange as simple copying or assume it only happened through conquest. They may confuse the movement of people with the movement of ideas, or assume influence always flowed one way.
How to Assess It: Ask: “Phoenician traders introduced their alphabet to Greek communities. Why is this cultural diffusion, and how did Greek culture change it?”

Lesson moves

Give groups artifact, map, and trade-route cards, then have them build chains showing where an idea began, traveled, and changed.
Ask, “Did Rome copy Greece or adapt Greek ideas?” Students cite two examples in a six-sentence response.
Play a matching game pairing ancient cultures with borrowed beliefs, technologies, writing systems, or art, then require evidence for each match.
Students trace one modern food, alphabet, or numeral system back to an ancient culture and mark its movement on a map.
