What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use maps and evidence to connect geography with where ancient people lived, traded, farmed, and built cities. They explain cause and effect using landforms, water, resources, climate, and location.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can identify a geographic feature and explain its effect on one or more ancient civilizations. The explanation includes specific evidence, such as river flooding supporting farming or mountain barriers limiting travel.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think rivers only provided drinking water, overlooking farming, transport, and trade. They may confuse absolute location with relative location or assume climate and resources affected every civilization in the same way.
How to Assess It
- Give students a map of ancient Egypt and ask: How did the Nile shape settlement and the economy? Require two map details in the response.
