What Students Need to Do: Students examine a historical source and name who created it, who was meant to receive it, what form it takes, and why it was made. They support each answer with details from the source and its historical context.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students accurately analyze letters, speeches, posters, laws, newspaper reports, and later historical accounts. They cite words, images, publication details, or background facts as evidence for each conclusion.
Common Misconceptions: Students may name the topic instead of the purpose, or call the audience “everyone.” They may confuse format with source type, assume the author is always one person, or accept the author’s claims as neutral facts.
How to Assess It: Display an 1863 Union Army recruitment poster. Ask students to identify its creator, intended audience, format, and purpose, then cite one clue for each answer.

Give groups printed copies of a letter, speech, newspaper report, and textbook page; students annotate creator, audience, format, purpose, and evidence.
Compare a patriot pamphlet with a modern historian’s account, then write which audience each targets and how that shapes its message.
