What Students Need to Do: Students inspect photographs, letters, artifacts, interviews, textbooks, and biographies. They decide whether each source gives firsthand evidence or an account created from other sources.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students correctly classify familiar sources and explain their choices using who created each source and how the creator got the information. They can use details from a source to answer a history question.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think every old object is firsthand evidence or every book is a later account. They may also confuse the date a source was created with the time period it describes.
How to Assess It: Show a diary entry and a textbook paragraph about the same event. Ask students to label each source type and write one reason for each choice.

Lesson moves

Give pairs a photograph, replica letter, biography page, and map to sort into firsthand evidence and later accounts.
Ask students to write which source they would trust for learning what a child saw during a hurricane, and explain why.
Play Source Detective by reading source cards aloud while students hold up P for firsthand or S for later accounts.
Compare a family photograph with a relative’s written family history to show how people learn about the past.
