What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students ask questions about the past and use maps, images, artifacts, letters, and accounts to find answers. They compare sources, notice perspective, and support conclusions with evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can identify primary and secondary sources and explain what each source contributes. They can make a clear claim, cite relevant details, and separate evidence from opinion.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think every primary source is accurate or unbiased. They may confuse when an event happened with when a source was created. They may make claims based on prior knowledge instead of source evidence.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short letter and textbook paragraph about the same event. Ask them to identify each source type and write one supported conclusion.

Ways to Teach It
Set up source stations with a map, diary excerpt, photograph, and artifact replica, then have groups record what each reveals.
Write a claim about a past event, cite two source details, and explain why those details support the claim.
Play Source Detective: teams sort cards as primary or secondary sources and earn a point only when they justify each choice.
Compare two local news reports about the same event and identify differences in facts, perspective, and missing information.
