What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students ask a question about the past, then find answers in photographs, letters, maps, artifacts, books, or trusted digital sources. They describe what each source shows and use details from it to support an answer.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can sort a firsthand source from a later account and explain the choice. The student can find relevant details in two sources and answer a historical question with evidence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think every old-looking object is a firsthand source or that every website is reliable. They may confuse what a source directly shows with a guess based on the source.
How to Assess It
- Show an old school photograph and a short encyclopedia paragraph. Ask, "Which source was created closer to the event, and what fact does each source give about school life?"

Ways to Teach It
Examine copies of an old photograph, letter, map, and textbook page, then sort them by source type and record one observation.
Ask, "Which source would best answer a question about children's games long ago, and why?"
Play Source Detective by matching historical questions with the photograph, diary entry, map, book, or website most likely to answer them.
Interview a longtime school employee, then compare that account with an old yearbook page to learn how the school has changed.
