What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students ask questions about the past and use pictures, objects, stories, and simple records to find answers. They place events in order and explain how sources provide clues.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can examine a source, name what it shows, and tell what it suggests about the past. They can sequence several events and support an answer with a specific clue.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat guesses as facts or assume every source tells the whole story. They may confuse past and present or order events by importance instead of time.

How to Assess It

Show an old classroom photo and ask, "What can you learn about school long ago? Name two clues from the photo."

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place a photograph, toy, letter, and tool in clue bags, then have students infer how each item was used.

  2. Ask students to write, "One thing this photograph tells me about the past is ___ because ___."

  3. Give pairs four picture cards from a familiar event, then have them race to arrange and explain the correct order.

  4. Compare a current school lunch menu with an older menu, then list what changed and what stayed the same.
