Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students ask questions about the past and use sources to find answers. They compare evidence, place events in order, and explain what the evidence shows.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can examine a photo, object, map, or short account and identify useful details. They can separate fact from opinion and support a conclusion with evidence from a source.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat every source as equally reliable or assume one source tells the whole story. They may confuse a later description with evidence created during the time being studied.
How to Assess It: Give students a historical photo and ask, "What can you learn from this source, and which two details support your answer?"

Lesson moves

Set up an artifact table with copies of old photos, tickets, and letters, then have students record clues about the people who used them.
Show two accounts of the same event and ask students to write what agrees, what differs, and which account seems more reliable.
Play Source Sort with cards labeled photograph, diary, textbook, map, and interview, sorting them by when and why each was created.
Invite students to study a local landmark photo, then use a map and short article to explain how the place changed over time.
