What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use teacher-approved websites, digital archives, or library databases to find information about the past. They gather facts from firsthand records and later accounts, then record where each fact came from.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can locate a digitized letter, photograph, diary, or artifact and a reliable article about the same topic. The student records relevant facts, labels each source type correctly, and names the website or source title.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume everything found online is a secondary source or that every old-looking image is a primary source. They may copy search snippets without opening the source, checking who created it, or deciding whether the information answers the question.
How to Assess It
- Give students a link to a digitized photograph and a short museum article. Ask them to label each source type and write one fact from each that answers, “What was school like long ago?”
