What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students ask questions about Florida’s past and use primary and secondary sources to find answers. They compare accounts, place evidence in context, and support conclusions with details.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can identify who created a source, when it was made, and what information it provides. The student combines evidence from two sources to explain a Florida event or person.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat every source as equally reliable or assume a primary source is always accurate. They may copy facts without connecting them, or confuse evidence with personal opinion.
How to Assess It
- Give students a historical Florida photograph and a short textbook paragraph. Ask, “What can you conclude from both sources, and which detail supports your conclusion?”

Ways to Teach It
Set out replica maps, postcards, photographs, and newspaper pages; students sort them by source type and record one usable clue from each.
Show two accounts of the same Florida event and ask, “What details agree, differ, or reveal each creator’s viewpoint?”
Play Source Detective: teams draw a source card, identify its creator, date, and purpose, then earn a point for supported reasoning.
Use a local historical marker and an online newspaper archive to check which claims are supported, missing, or need more evidence.
