What Students Need to Do: Students ask a simple question about the past and choose a source that may answer it. They use books, photographs, maps, objects, or child-safe digital sources to find information.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can choose a useful source and explain why it fits their question. They can point to a picture, fact, label, or detail that supports their answer.
Common Misconceptions: Students may choose a source because it looks interesting, not because it matches the question. They may treat guesses as facts or overlook useful information in captions and pictures.
How to Assess It: Give students the question, "What did children wear to school long ago?" Ask them to choose between a historical photograph and a weather map, then explain their choice.

Lesson moves

Set up stations with a picture book, map, photograph, and artifact replica; students rotate and record one useful detail on a sticky note.
Show an old school photograph and ask, "What can we learn about school long ago, and which details support your answer?"
Play Source Match: students pair question cards about the past with the book, map, photograph, or website most likely to help.
Visit the media center and have students ask the librarian where to find information about a local building or community tradition.
