What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students ask simple questions about the past and use pictures, objects, stories, and family accounts to find answers. They put events in order and explain which clues support an answer.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given an old photograph or object, a student can ask a relevant question and identify a clue about the past. The student can also arrange three events in time order.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may call any unfamiliar object old or assume every black-and-white picture comes from the same time. They may describe a source without using details as evidence. They may order events by card position instead of time clues.
How to Assess It
- Show a photograph of an older classroom. Ask students to circle two clues that show it is from the past and explain one clue aloud.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs photo cards of telephones, toys, and classrooms from different times; students sort them and point to evidence.
Show two playground photographs and ask, What changed, what stayed the same, and what clues helped you decide?
Play Before or After by having students arrange picture cards from a familiar daily routine and explain each choice.
Students ask an older adult about a childhood toy, then draw the older toy beside a toy children use now.
