What Students Need to Do: Students examine an object, photograph, letter, or recording from the past. They notice details and explain how the source gives clues about people or events.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students identify a photograph or object made or used during the time being studied. They describe one visible detail and make a reasonable claim about the past.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think every old-looking picture or book comes from the time shown. They may also treat guesses as facts instead of using details from the source.
How to Assess It: Show an old family photograph and ask, “What detail gives us a clue about life when this photograph was taken?”

Lesson moves

Place an old photograph, coin, and postcard at stations, then have students draw one detail they notice from each source.
Show a class photograph from long ago and ask, “What can we learn from this picture, and what can we not know?”
Play Source Detective by having students sort picture cards into items from the time and later retellings.
Ask students to bring or sketch a family keepsake and explain what it can tell others about their family’s past.
