Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students ask focused questions about the past, gather primary and secondary sources, check perspective and reliability, and support conclusions with corroborated evidence. They use geography, economics, political science, sociology, and anthropology to explain patterns and human behavior.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can turn a broad topic into a researchable question, classify sources, spot bias, and explain why two accounts differ. The student can choose a social science lens and show how it adds evidence to a historical explanation.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat historical inquiry as memorizing dates or searching for one correct account. They often assume a primary source is always accurate or unbiased. They may name other fields without explaining how each one helps answer a historical question.
How to Assess It: Give students an ancient trade map and a merchant's diary excerpt. Ask them to write one historical question, one source check, and one way geography or economics could help answer it.

Lesson moves

Give pairs artifact photos, maps, and written accounts to sort by source type, then write one question each source could help answer.
Ask students to explain how geography and economics might account for a city growing beside a river, using evidence from a provided map.
