What Students Need to Do: Students name and use time units such as decades, centuries, and millennia. They read BCE and CE dates and place dates and named periods on a timeline.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can identify 476 CE as part of the fifth century and explain why 500 BCE comes before 400 BCE. They can label a timeline with an era such as the Roman Empire and distinguish an era from a fixed-length unit such as a century.
Common Misconceptions: Students often call 1900 the twentieth century instead of the nineteenth. They may think BCE years increase as time moves forward or that an era always lasts a set number of years.
How to Assess It: Give students 500 BCE, 400 BCE, and 476 CE. Ask them to put the dates in order, name the century of 476 CE, and explain which way BCE dates run.

Lesson moves

Give pairs date cards and a strip of paper; have them build a timeline across BCE and CE and label centuries.
Ask students to write two sentences explaining why 500 BCE comes before 400 BCE.
Play century sort: call out dates such as 100 CE, 101 CE, and 1900 CE for students to place under century labels.
Show a museum timeline of ancient Egypt; have students mark one decade, one century, and the span labeled Old Kingdom.
