What Students Need to Do: Students explain how historians name, measure, and organize time. They classify dates by decade, century, millennium, era, or epoch and use BCE and CE correctly.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can place dates on a timeline and label each date with the correct time designation. They can explain why 476 CE is in the fifth century and 250 BCE is in the third century BCE.
Common Misconceptions: Students often call 476 CE part of the fourth century or think BCE dates increase as time moves forward. They may think AD means “after death” or treat era and epoch as fixed lengths of time.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Label 250 BCE, 476 CE, and 2026 CE by century, then explain which direction BCE dates run on a timeline.

Lesson moves

Give groups dated event cards to place on a rope timeline marked BCE, CE, centuries, and millennia.
Ask students to write how a decade differs from a century, then compare answers with a partner.
Play a century sort game where students race to place year cards under the correct century heading.
Use dates from the school, local landmarks, and family-safe events to identify their decades, centuries, and millennia.
