What Students Need to Do: Students place events in order using words such as before, after, first, next, and last. They recognize labels such as year, decade, century, past, present, and future.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given four dated events, a student orders them from earliest to latest and describes the sequence with accurate time words. The student matches decade with 10 years and century with 100 years.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think a larger year happened earlier, or reverse before and after when comparing events. They may treat a decade or century as one exact date and confuse past with future.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Put 2018, 2021, and 2024 in order from earliest to latest. Then complete, “2021 came ___ 2018 and ___ 2024,” and name the term for 10 years.

Lesson moves

Give pairs dated event cards and yarn, then have them clip the cards in order and label first, next, and last.
Ask, “How would our class story change if recess came before arrival?” and have students explain using before and after.
Play Time Match with cards pairing 10 years to decade, 100 years to century, and sequence words to sample events.
Use the school calendar to identify what happened yesterday, what happens today, and what will happen tomorrow.
