What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use maps, globes, and coordinates to describe where places are located. They explain spatial relationships using direction, distance, scale, and map symbols.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students locate a place using latitude and longitude, then describe its position relative to other places. They read a map key and scale accurately.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may reverse latitude and longitude or confuse east with west. They may treat map distance as actual distance or overlook the map key and scale.
How to Assess It
- Give students a labeled map and ask them to locate one coordinate, name a nearby feature, and estimate the distance between two points.

Ways to Teach It
Students build a classroom map with grid coordinates, a compass rose, symbols, a key, and a simple scale.
Ask students to write directions from Florida to another state using relative location, cardinal directions, and major geographic features.
Play coordinate bingo by calling latitude and longitude pairs for students to find on a world map.
Students use a local transit or park map to plan a route and estimate its distance using the scale.
