What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students read maps to locate Florida places and describe how features are positioned. They use map titles, symbols, keys, scales, directions, and coordinates to interpret physical and political maps.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can locate and label major landforms, bodies of water, cities, and boundaries on a Florida map. They can follow directions, estimate distance, use coordinates, and explain information shown by map symbols.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse physical features with human-made features or political boundaries. They may reverse east and west, treat map symbols as literal pictures, or mix up latitude and longitude.

How to Assess It

Give students a Florida map with a key, scale, compass rose, and coordinate grid. Ask them to locate one physical feature, one city, and describe the city’s location using direction and coordinates.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a blank Florida map, feature cards, string, and a ruler to place landmarks, trace routes, and estimate distances.

  2. Ask, “How does Florida’s location and shape affect where people live and prepare for weather?” Require two map details.

  3. Run a map-key relay where teams decode symbols, follow cardinal and intermediate directions, and name the feature reached.

  4. Have students plan an evacuation route from a coastal town using a road map, scale, compass rose, and inland shelter locations.
