What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use maps and globes to describe where places are. They identify basic map features and use words such as near, far, left, right, north, and south.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can find land, water, Florida, and the United States on an age-appropriate map or globe. They can follow a simple route and describe one place in relation to another.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat maps as pictures rather than views of places from above. They may confuse land with water, mix up left and right, or think symbols show an object’s actual size.

How to Assess It

Give students a simple classroom map. Ask them to circle the door, draw a route from their desk to the door, and describe the route aloud.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build a classroom map with blocks, then place labeled cards for desks, doors, windows, and shared spaces.

  2. Show a map and ask, “How can you describe the library’s location without pointing?”

  3. Play Map Direction Simon Says using commands such as move north, turn right, and stand beside the table.

  4. Map the route from the classroom to the cafeteria, noting landmarks students pass along the way.
