What Students Need to Do: Students draw a simple map of a familiar place. They show north, south, east, and west, then use clear symbols with a matching key.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can map a classroom, bedroom, or playground so another person can follow it. Directions are correctly placed, and each symbol matches the key.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse east and west or treat north as whichever way they are facing. They may draw detailed pictures instead of symbols or forget to explain symbols in a key.
How to Assess It: Ask students to draw a map of the classroom with a compass rose, symbols for three objects, and a key. Check that directions and symbols match.
