What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students find and name landforms and bodies of water shown on maps and globes. They use color, shape, labels, and map keys to tell features apart.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given an unfamiliar map or globe, a student can point to and name several features, such as a mountain, river, lake, ocean, or island. The student can explain which visual clue helped.

Common Misconceptions

Students may call every blue area an ocean instead of distinguishing oceans, rivers, and lakes. They may confuse physical features with states, countries, cities, or roads. They may think a feature looks exactly like its map symbol.

How to Assess It

Give each student a simple map and access to a globe. Ask them to circle a river and mountain on the map, then point to an ocean and continent on the globe.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Mold a mountain, river, lake, and island in clay, then sketch and label how each would look from above on a map.

  2. Show the same place on a wall map and globe, then ask, “What physical features can you find on both?”

  3. Play Feature Hunt: call out river, mountain, lake, ocean, or island, and students cover matching examples on laminated maps.

  4. Use a Florida road map to locate the peninsula, Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, and nearby lakes that travelers might cross.
