What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify political, physical, and thematic maps by the information each one shows. They locate the title, legend, symbols, compass rose, and scale, then explain what each element tells the reader.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can name a map type and use its elements to answer a question. They can explain, for example, how a legend identifies a capital or how colors show elevation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think every map shows the same information or that a political map is about elections. They may confuse the compass rose with the legend or treat colors as decoration instead of symbols.
How to Assess It
- Give students one political, physical, or thematic map. Ask them to name the map type, circle three map elements, and explain one symbol using the legend.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs three printed maps and sticky notes to label each title, legend, compass rose, scale, symbol, and map type.
Ask students to write which map they would choose to find a state capital, mountain range, or rainfall pattern, and explain why.
Play Map Element Match by having students pair cards showing map features with cards naming their purpose.
Compare a Florida political map, elevation map, and weather map, then list one decision each map could help someone make.
