What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose maps or graphics that fit a historical question. They read titles, dates, legends, scales, and sources. They compare evidence across time to explain patterns, problems, and likely effects.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can compare maps from two periods without mixing up symbols, boundaries, or scale. The student cites mapped evidence to describe a change and explain how geography shaped choices or problems. The student can recommend a reasonable response supported by the data.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may compare colors without checking whether legends use the same categories. They may treat present-day borders as if they existed in earlier periods. They may also assume nearby events caused each other without supporting evidence.
How to Assess It
- Give students U.S. population density maps from 1840 and 1890. Ask: “Identify one major shift, cite two map details, and name one challenge the shift created.”

Ways to Teach It
Students layer tracing paper over U.S. settlement maps from 1800, 1850, and 1900, then mark movement, barriers, and growing cities.
Ask pairs: “Which mattered more to western city growth, water routes or railroads, and what map evidence supports your claim?”
Run a map-match relay where teams pair historical maps with matching graphs, dates, and evidence cards, then justify each match.
Students compare a historic local land-use map with a current flood-risk map, then propose where future housing should and should not be built.
