What Students Need to Do: Students point to land and water on simple maps and globes. They use map colors, shapes, and labels to explain their choices.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students correctly identify several land and water areas on both a map and a globe. They can tell how they knew which was which.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think every blue area is water and every green area is land. They may confuse islands with water or overlook water surrounded by land.
How to Assess It: Give students a simple unlabeled map. Ask them to circle one land area, color one water area blue, and explain one choice aloud.

Lesson moves

Give pairs a globe and sticky notes labeled land and water, then have them place each note on matching areas.
Show a simple map and ask, “What clues help you decide whether an area is land or water?”
Play Land or Water by showing map cards and having students move to the matching side of the room.
Use a local map to find nearby land and water, such as parks, beaches, lakes, rivers, or ponds.
