What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students locate and label major landforms and bodies of water within the United States. They use direction, region, and nearby features to describe each location.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can accurately place major features such as the Rocky Mountains, Appalachian Mountains, Great Plains, Great Lakes, and Mississippi River. The student can identify them on maps with different colors, symbols, and scales.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may mistake state borders and cities for physical features. They often reverse the Rocky and Appalachian Mountains or place the Mississippi River in the wrong region. Some recognize feature names but cannot locate them on an unlabeled map.
How to Assess It
- Give students a blank U.S. map and ask them to label the Rocky Mountains, Appalachian Mountains, Great Plains, Great Lakes, and Mississippi River.

Ways to Teach It
Build a raised-relief U.S. map with clay, then label major mountains, plains, lakes, and rivers with small flags.
Ask, “How might mountains, plains, rivers, and lakes affect where people travel, farm, or build cities?”
Play a map relay where teams draw feature cards and place sticky notes on the correct locations.
Trace a cross-country road trip and list the major landforms and bodies of water the route crosses.
