What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify well-known natural features and human-made structures from the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean. They classify each landmark and connect it to the correct country or region.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can name, classify, and locate examples such as Niagara Falls, the Statue of Liberty, Chichén Itzá, and the Pitons. They use maps or images to explain where each landmark is found.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think every famous place is human-made or that any large building is a landmark. They may also treat the Caribbean as one country or place Mexican and Canadian landmarks in the United States.
How to Assess It
- Give students four landmark pictures and a labeled regional map. Ask them to classify each as natural or human-made, then place it in the correct location.

Ways to Teach It
Have groups sort landmark photo cards into natural and human-made categories, then attach them to a large map.
Ask students to choose one landmark and write three clues that identify its type, appearance, and location.
Play landmark bingo using picture boards and clues that name a location, country, or natural feature.
Plan a four-stop travel route with one landmark from each region, including its location and whether people or nature created it.
