What Students Need to Do: Students read a political map and find Canada, the United States, Mexico, and the Caribbean islands. They use labels, borders, and direction words to explain where each place is.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students correctly label all four locations on a simple map. They can explain that Canada is north of the United States, Mexico is south, and the Caribbean is southeast.
Common Misconceptions: Students may place Mexico in South America or think the Caribbean is one country. They may also treat Alaska as a separate country or confuse north and south.
How to Assess It: Give students a blank North America map. Ask them to label Canada, the United States, Mexico, and the Caribbean, then write one location sentence.

Lesson moves

Give pairs a laminated map and four place-name cards, then have them place each card in the correct location.
Ask students, “How would you guide a traveler from Canada to Mexico using direction words?”
Play map bingo by calling place names and having students cover the matching locations on individual maps.
Show a hurricane tracking map and ask students which North American countries or Caribbean islands are near the storm path.
