What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students locate and label nine named places on political maps of North America and the Caribbean. They use coastlines, borders, and nearby islands to place each label correctly.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately label all nine places on an unlabeled map. They distinguish Haiti from the Dominican Republic and place Puerto Rico, Cuba, Jamaica, and The Bahamas correctly.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often reverse Canada and Mexico or place Caribbean labels on the wrong islands. They may miss that Haiti and the Dominican Republic share one island, or treat Puerto Rico as an independent country.
How to Assess It
- Give students a blank map and a nine-name word bank. Ask them to place every name, then circle the two countries that share one island.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a blank map, nine name cards, and removable putty, then have them place each card in the correct location.
Ask students to write three location clues using north, south, east, or west to describe selected Caribbean places.
Run a map relay where teams draw a name card and point to that place on a large wall map.
Show a Caribbean hurricane tracking map and have students identify which labeled countries or commonwealths lie near the storm path.
