What Students Need to Do: Students name cultural groups that have lived in each region and locate them on a map. They connect examples such as Inuit, First Nations, Maya, Taíno, Spanish, French, British, West African, and Chinese communities with supported places.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a labeled map and a word bank, a student accurately matches several groups to each region. The student supports two matches and explains that the cultural mix reflects Indigenous homelands, colonization, forced migration, and voluntary migration.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat each country as having one culture or call the Caribbean a single country. They may omit Indigenous peoples or assume all migration was voluntary. They may confuse culture, race, nationality, and country of origin.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Choose two regions. For each, name one Indigenous people and one later-arriving cultural group, then explain one choice.

Lesson moves

Using a floor map, students place cards labeled Inuit, Maya, Taíno, French, Spanish, British, West African, and Chinese in supported regions.
Discuss: How can one country include many cultures, and what evidence from the map or readings supports your answer?
Play a region match game with culture cards, then require partners to justify each match before keeping the card.
Examine a local restaurant menu, festival flyer, or place name, then trace its cultural roots to one of the four regions.
