What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify cultural traits such as languages, foods, music, celebrations, and traditions. They use maps, photos, and short texts to explain similarities and differences between communities.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students give accurate examples of one similarity and one difference. They support each comparison with source details and recognize that people within the same place may have different cultures.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume everyone in a country shares one culture. They may treat shared traditions as identical or confuse physical features with cultural traits. Some may rely on stereotypes instead of evidence.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Compare the U.S. Southwest and Mexico using one cultural similarity and one difference. Name the source detail supporting each point.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs labeled source cards showing foods, languages, music, celebrations, and traditions from the Southwest and Mexico, then have them build a Venn diagram.
Ask students to write: How can two places share a tradition but practice it differently? Use two details from class sources.
